John attended the UH Hilo and later graduated from UH Manoa with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. While working toward a Masters Degree in Far Eastern Studies, he earned his professional teaching certificate and taught at several Island schools.
Carroll went into the U.S. Army and served in Korea during the war. He transferred to the U.S. Air Force after graduating from the University of Hawaii and went on to flight school where he earned his wings. After jet fighter pilot training, he was a combat-ready fighter pilot, instrument flight examiner, tactical evaluation officer and operational planer for fifteen years. He was instrumental in the planning for Hawaii’s first deployment of fighters by the Hawaii Air National Guard.
While stationed in San Antonio, Texas, in addition to flying the Delta Dagger, F-102 for the Texas Air National Guard.
He also attended St. Mary’s University College of Law. He received his Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree, passed the bar in Hawaii and was admitted to practice law in 1965. Carroll was certified as a staff Judge Advocate for both the Army and Air National Guard units in the State of Hawaii. Carroll received an Air Force commendation for authoring Hawaii’s Code of Military Justice. John has gone on to specialize in aviation law, and was associated with Melvin Belli on the noteworthy Aloha and United Airlines cases.
Carroll also served as a commercial pilot who flew for Hawaiian Airlines from 1958 until 1989. John was a member of the pilot’s union for over 30 years.
He was also the founding Chairman and CEO of Hawaii Aviation Contract Services, a successful pilot placement service for major pacific rim airlines.
John Carroll was elected five times to the Hawaii State Legislature where it was his honor to serve the people of Hawaii 4 terms in the House of Representative and one term as a State Senator.
John is committed to the future of Hawaii for his six children, eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
